Free Interior Design Client Questionnaire (Editable Word & Google Docs)
Thirty-five questions on how your client lives, their style, budget and how they like to work. A Word document you own and edit.
The questions to ask before the first meeting
The first meeting with a new client goes one of two ways. Either you spend an hour working through a list of questions, or you walk in already knowing how they live, what they love, what the budget really is, and who actually makes the decisions, and spend the hour on the interesting part.
This questionnaire is the second one. Send it after the enquiry call, and read the answers before you meet.
Most free questionnaires only work inside someone’s software. This one is a Word document. Your logo, your questions, your file. Send it as a document or paste it into the form tool you already use.
What’s inside
Thirty-five questions in six sections, written to be answered by a client, not a designer:
1. About you
Who lives there, and the question that saves the most trouble later: who makes the final decisions?
2. The project
Rooms in scope, the date it has to be finished by and why, and who else is already involved.
3. Budget
Written so a range is easy to give, with room to say where they'd spend more and where they'd save. You get more honest numbers this way.
4. How you live
A normal weekday, how they entertain, what doesn't work now, what never has a home.
5. Style
Three words for how it should feel, colours and materials, places they've loved being in.
6. Working together
How they want to hear from you, how fast they usually reply, how involved they want to be. The answers you'll refer back to when decisions start running late.
Plus a page of designer notes on how to use it (delete it before you send).

Free. Email required, and we’ll send the Word file. It opens in Google Docs and Pages too.
Why we’re giving it away
The questionnaire is free, and it is yours to edit
Mortar is project and budget management for interior designers. The questionnaire is where a project starts. Mortar is where the rest of it lives: the budget, the selections, and your client’s approvals in one place, with a portal they open from a link, no account needed.
So the questionnaire is free, and it’s yours to edit however you like. A few emails on running client relationships well, then we leave you alone.
FAQ
- When should I send a client questionnaire?
- After the first enquiry call and before the discovery meeting. Long enough after the call that they know you're serious, early enough that you read the answers before you meet.
- Should I ask about budget in a questionnaire?
- Yes, but make a range easy. Clients often won't name a number in a meeting, and will tick a range on a form. The template's wording ("there's no wrong answer here") gets better answers than a blank box.
- Can I change the questions?
- Please do. It's a Word document so you can. Cut sections that don't fit furnishing-only jobs, add a commercial section for hospitality or office work.
- Can I turn it into an online form?
- Yes. Paste the questions into Google Forms, Typeform or whatever you use. The Google Docs copy makes that easy.
Run your next project on one list. Get your evenings back.
Load a real project into the trial. Paste a product link and watch it fill itself in, then open the portal your client would see. You'll know within a week.
